ITP logo

A professional body for the telecommunication industry, The Institute of Telecommunications Professionals works to inspire and aid the personal development of people working in telecommunications.

Through its publications, lectures and other services, The Institute of Telecommunications Professionals helps its members to understand developments within the telecommunications and related industries, to develop their professional skills, and to build their network of contacts.

The Institute of Telecommunications Professionals has been a key player in Connected Earth, gathering oral history and organising a network of volunteers to provide conservation and interpretation across the distributed collections.

Volunteers at Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre

Volunteer network

The Institute of Telecommunications Professionals coordinates the volunteer network to help Connected Earth museums across the UK which are looking for volunteers to get involved in looking after their collections and making them accessible.

The museums all have different needs; some are small, independent museums which wouldn't open at all without volunteer help and others are national institutions, which are looking for volunteers with specialist knowledge to help with these specialist collections.

Fred Stanford, Connected Earth volunteer at Amberley Working Museum in West Sussex, said, "Working as a volunteer at Amberley has been a genuinely fulfilling experience for me. It's allowed me to use technical skills I thought I'd never need again - and I really enjoy talking to people as they explore the gallery. I'd encourage anyone who has a bit of free time to get involved."

Volunteers would be welcomed at the following museums:

  • Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre in West Sussex is looking for guides as well as people with telecommunications experience.
  • Avoncroft Museum in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire is looking for people to help with general maintenance jobs as well as people with telecommunications experience.
  • Milton Keynes Museum in Buckinghamshire is looking for guides as well as people with telecommunications experience.
  • The Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester is looking for telephone engineers, preferably with a knowledge of Strowger.
  • The National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh is looking for people with telecommunications experience.
  • Porthcurno Telegraph Museum in Cornwall is looking for people to help with general administration as well as people with telecommunications experience.
  • The Science Museum in London is looking for telephone engineers, especially people with a knowledge of System X.
