This project is a concise history of the key events in telecommunication developments over the years. Exercises encourage thought about the way things used to be, and how technology has changed in recent years.
The first steps to a Connected Earth
Telecommunications is the science and technology of transmitting information electronically over distance, using radio signals or electrical or optical lines. Telecommunications isn't a modern idea. The word comes from the Greek word 'tele' meaning 'far away'.
Experience life before it became a Connected Earth
Life in the 1850s was very different. Study the pictures below, showing life at this time here and abroad, and identify the differences by making comparisons to the way we live today.
Slowly but surely making connections
Scientists in the 18th century faced enormous challenges. Most worked in primitive conditions using basic equipment with little or no money. In 1861, Reis - the first man to transmit sound electrically - created a talking machine from the bung of a beer barrel; a piece of skin; a magnet; a coil of wire; a knitting needle; a violin and some platinum. This is in stark contrast to today's scientists working in well-equipped laboratories, with modern technology at their fingertips and financial backing from a company or sponsor.
