I think with modern technology I don't really believe that the people have to understand how it works to be able to use it. If you are using computers and therefore you're going to use e-mail there are advantages in knowing how they work, but with normal communications like the telephones using text messaging and so on, how it does it is almost immaterial. It's an easy way of keeping in touch with people who are a long way away. It's cheaper than the telephone and quite often it's easier to get send somebody what is effectively a written message. You can't always get hold of someone directly but at least if you send them an e-mail you know sooner or later they're going to get the message.
