There were lots of things happening in the world outside which were to affect communications. There were things like the Czech revolution in the late fifties which increased massively the demand for circuits. There were things like the space programmes which again increased people's interest and the demand for international communications, and of course I can recall the early days of what were known as space lobs when the Americans were throwing somebody up into space and dropping them in the middle of the Atlantic ocean some ten minutes later. But all these things were part and parcel of the early days of development of what was subsequently to become a very effective satellite communication system.
