In June 1870, the British end of the first undersea telegraph cable to Bombay was landed at Porthcurno. For the next 100 years, Porthcurno remained as a working telegraph station. By the early years of the 20th century the village was home to the worlds largest telegraph station.
During the Second World War the telegraph equipment was moved into an underground building to protect it from enemy bombing. Today these tunnels house the award-winning Porthcurno Telegraph Museum.
Passing through the original bomb-proof doors you find yourself in the South Tunnel. In front of you is a spacious introduction area which describes the building of the tunnels.
