The 1980s saw the introduction of a keypad that made it easier to dial. The phone incorporated a digital display, a call timer, clock and alarm. The decade also saw the phasing out of hardwired connections to plug and socket, enabling the customer to buy their own phone from a range of suppliers rather than rent the equipment.
