Exhibition area 3 - K6s and K1 Mk 235

The first kiosks on view are K6s, the "classic" telephone kiosk design. Introduced in 1936, these kiosks were the standard UK kiosk design for the next 30 years. One reason why they are considered a classic is that many more of them were installed than ever before. By the end of the 1930s, there were 20,000 K6s in the UK. You can tell that these K6s were manufactured after 1953, as the crown in the fascia is the Queen's crown, rather than the crown of King George V, who died in 1952.
The next kiosk on view is the K1 Mk 235. The Kiosk No. 1, or K1, was introduced in 1921. Made of concrete, the first version had wooden window frames, which was soon replaced by metal frames in the Mk 235 version, shown here.
Finally, you can see the outside of a mobile exchange, the interior of which is visible in the next tour.
