Welcome and introduction by Sir Christopher Bland, Chairman, BT Group

An excerpt from Sir Christopher Bland, Chairman, BT Group, speaking at the Connected Earth launch on April 11, 2002:

BT and its predecessors have been at the forefront of this industry throughout the development of telecoms. And that has given us one of the world's largest collections of artefacts in this industry.

It remains, Telecommunications, one of the hallmarks of human ingenuity and progress. It deserves to be a subject of scholarship and exploration, and it is this that Connected Earth will help to stimulate and encourage.

Very briefly, Connected Earth involves the distribution of BT's collection of over 5,000 artefacts to a network of some of the country's finest museums and it will provide improved access to information about the development of telecoms.

But it goes further than that. because the improved access will not only be physical it will be virtual as well. Connected Earth is also an online museum that you can visit while sitting at home, transforming the value of BT's distributed collection, and acting as a role model in certain respects to museums of the future.

Connected Earth's website allows online visitors to enjoy 3D images, listen to oral history and interact. It combines educational resources and programmes linked to the national curricula.

And it's also our contribution to increasing access to museums in the UK.
